Two Births – and a Death – in Perth

The Hall family welcomed their fifth child, Louisa Adelaide, in Perth on July 26, 1877. On a copy of her birth certificate, the informant, who supplied required information,  was Lydia’s mother-in-law Janet Hall and not her husband William. I don’t know if William was just not there at the moment or if he was elsewhere completing the paperwork for his discharge. To me if seems that Lydia must have ben pregnant both right after her daughter Florence Edith died and on the voyage home from India. By steamship, the trip took about 40 days and accommodations were sparse.

A second daughter, Lydia Selina Hall, was born on March 8, 1880. I found both records on Scotland’s People. Both are handwritten, and it is difficult to make out all the details. The entire family was counted in the  1881 Scotland Census.

In the 1881 Scotland census, William is listed as being 43 years old, born about 1836 in Perth, and head of the household. He was a laborer. The family lived at 39 Cross Street, in Perth (Registration District), Perth West Church (Civil Parish), and Perthshire (County). Other members of the household were Lydia, 39, Thomas, 10, James, 12, Jane, 10, Louise, 4, and Lydia, 13 months, Jane is misprinted as Jeane, and she and Thomas have the same age. Those must both be errors by the census enumerator or in transcription.

Lydia Selina Ramsbottom Hall died on January 13, 1882, in Perth of consumption. She died at home at 39 Cross Street, and her husband William was present. Lydia was 39 when she died. Her death certificate gives the name of her mother and father, but their names are hard to read correctly. Her father could have the first name of James or Samel, and her mother’s last name could be Rikard. What do you think? I know you can’t read this image, but it makes me feel better to put it on here. It is a mystery I have yet to solve.

My Mom Ada

This blog traces the family history of my mom, Edith Porter Duffy. From the time I was a little girl, my mom would tell me stories about her family, who all called her Ada. I only wish I had asked her more questions while she was still here!
